LEON SCHOLLUM
Director, New Zealand & Australia

In the 1960s Leon Schollum embarked on a career in the medical and pharmaceutical industry.

After six years as National Sales Manager for McGaw Ethicals in Auckland, Leon was offered a position as International Sales Manager with its parent company, McGaw USA. He subsequently moved to California with his family in 1976.

This role required extensive travel to places such as China, India, Puerto Rico, England, Canada and Saudi Arabia.

Leon returned to New Zealand in 1981 with a plan to start his own pharmaceutical and medical distribution company. Later that year, he and wife Shirley established REM SYSTEMS.

Leon’s input, along with that of his fellow directors and staff members, has seen the company evolve into the largest privately held medical company in New Zealand. This success led to the formation of a subsidiary company REM SYSTEMS Pty Ltd, which was established in Sydney, Australia, in 1994.

Overseeing two companies and almost 40 staff requires Leon to wear a few hats. This variety, along with “working as a team and watching staff develop their commercial skills” is very satisfying, he says.

Away from the office, Leon enjoys his role as a grandfather and is at home in the outdoors – where he pursues his passion for gardening and fishing. He is also interested in reading and photography and has an impressive photographic collection chronicling his overseas travels.
