Our History


After a successful career in California as International Sales Manager for McGaw Laboratories, Leon Schollum returned to his homeland, New Zealand, in 1981 to begin his own pharmaceutical and medical company in Auckland.

The name "REM SYSTEMS" was chosen for the company - "REM" is an abbreviation of the surname "Remiger" which belonged to Leon's grandmother Christina, of Czechoslovakian descent. The choice of "SYSTEMS" was quite deliberate as it represents the company's goal of providing a system or family of products in a specific market segment so it can be a "one-stop shop" for customers.

From humble beginnings in their home basement, Leon and his wife Shirley began their new venture.

Their goal was to import advanced-technology medical and pharmaceutical products from leading overseas manufacturers for sale and distribution to hospitals and health care professionals. Today the focus remains the same along with a recent expansion into the veterinary market.

At the end of 1983 Brian Wilsher joined REM SYSTEMS, bringing an extensive cardiovascular product knowledge from sales experience in the industry. Brian became the third shareholder and director of the company.

As REM SYSTEMS grew, so did the need for larger premises and in 1990 a building was erected in Glen Innes, Auckland. It was officially opened that year by the late former Prime Minister, Sir Robert Muldoon.

In 1994 REM SYSTEMS established a subsidiary company in Australia, REM SYSTEMS Pty Ltd. Based in Sydney, the company services all of the States directly except in Western Australia where all products are represented by Actamed Pty Ltd.

The companies' modern-designed buildings have a combined office and warehouse space of 4000 square metres, including dedicated customer service areas, meeting rooms and video-conferencing facilities.

State-of-the-art software and hardware has recently been installed to control and track stock with a view to offering e-commerce compatibility to clients in the near future.

REM SYSTEMS entered the new millennium with a portfolio encompassing over 8,500 individual products. The diverse range covers everything from implantable heart valves to syringes and one of our specialties is custom-designed intravenous administration sets and accessories.

The majority of our 35 staff members across New Zealand and Australia are graduates with either science, business or nursing tertiary degrees. Together, we are able to offer over 200 years of experience in the medical and pharmaceutical industries.

In 2001 REM SYSTEMS Ltd celebrated its 20 year anniversary having become the largest privately owned medical distribution company in New Zealand.

By bringing competition and the latest advances to the market, we will continue our commitment to improve the health of people in New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific.
